We had Aidan's 2nd birthday party last Friday at a local ceramic cafe and play centre - lots of climbing and playing and a little ornament or tile for them each to paint. Yes there was much inner anguish about booking a party instead of throwing one ourselves at home; surely a proper mum would do all the party bags/catering herself, it's too expensive whilst I'm not earning a wage, if we're doing this when he's 2 where will it all end yada yada...but afterwards I was really glad we had it there. The thing is, I'm not in any way a natural host and being very aware and self-conscious of this fact makes it worse - so having somebody else do it was far, far less stressful, phew! Anyway, my only job was the Timmy cake, iced a couple of hours before the party so that the buttercream would be fresh and not a melty-mess.
After all the practice we put in blowing out candles, when it came down to it he got stage-fright.
